OpenSCAD to Bambu Studio — 3MF in one click

Open the editor

Designing in OpenSCAD and printing on a Bambu Lab printer used to mean three chores: export a file, find it in the downloads folder, and drag it into the slicer. openscad-web shortens that to one menu item. Export… → Open in Bambu Studio builds a 3MF from your design and hands it to Bambu Studio on your computer, ready to slice.

Why 3MF instead of STL

An STL is a bare list of triangles with no unit. A 3MF is a small zip package that carries the mesh together with its unit, which is the format Bambu Studio uses for its own projects. openscad-web scales your model to millimetres and writes the 3MF itself, because the WebAssembly build of OpenSCAD cannot export 3MF directly. The result is one object, placed in a file named after your design. If you only want the file, Export… → 3MF downloads it without opening anything.

What happens when you click

  1. Save. The editor saves your code and any pending Customizer changes first, so the slicer never receives an older version than the one on your screen.
  2. Private link. The server creates a link to a 3MF of exactly that saved version. The link contains a random token and works for 15 minutes. It keeps the reviewed version, units and parameters even if the design is edited again afterwards.
  3. Handoff page. A new tab opens a small page with an Open Bambu Studio button. Your browser asks whether it may open the app; allow it, then confirm the import in Bambu Studio.
  4. Fallback. The same page has a direct download the 3MF link in case the app does not open.

The handoff page is a deliberate extra click. Browsers only let a page launch a desktop application in direct response to a user's click, and the save before the export takes a moment; the button keeps that permission intact.

macOS, Windows and Linux

Bambu Studio registers different URL handlers per platform, and the handoff page picks the right one from your browser: bambustudioopen:// on macOS, and bambustudio://open?file=… on Windows and Linux. On Linux, the Bambu Studio desktop entry has to register x-scheme-handler/bambustudio and pass the URL with %U; AppImage installations may need that added manually. If the launch does not work on your system, the download link always does.

Privacy of the link

Bambu Studio fetches the file without your browser's session cookie, so the link itself is the key. It is long and random, is sent with no-store caching and no-referrer, and stops working after 15 minutes, when you delete the design, or when the server restarts. Do not paste it anywhere public during those minutes.

From a chat, too

If you design with an AI assistant connected over MCP, the interactive openscad-web view that opens inside MCP Apps-compatible chats has its own Open in Bambu Studio button. It exports the model you reviewed in the chat and uses the same handoff page, so you can go from a conversation to the slicer without visiting the website. Read more on OpenSCAD with AI assistants.

Before you slice

Check the size and the NOT MANIFOLD warning in the status bar, and the orientation in the 3D view, before sending the model. The export guide has a short checklist. New to the editor? Start with OpenSCAD online — no install.

FAQ

How long does the Bambu Studio link work?

15 minutes. After that the link answers that it has expired; go back to the editor or chat and create a new one.

Does Bambu Studio need my openscad-web login?

No. Bambu Studio downloads the 3MF through a private, unguessable link, so it does not need your browser's sign-in.

Bambu Studio did not open. What now?

Use the download link on the handoff page and open the 3MF in Bambu Studio yourself. On Linux, the Bambu Studio desktop entry must register the bambustudio URL scheme; AppImage installs may need it added by hand.

Will the slicer get my latest edits?

Yes. The design, including unsaved code and slider changes, is saved before the link is created, and the link keeps that exact version.

Can I do this from Claude or ChatGPT?

Yes. The interactive openscad-web view inside MCP Apps-compatible chats has the same Open in Bambu Studio button.
